THE ALDERMAN

Growing up in Utica
In the heart of Western Hinds County lies Utica, Mississippi—a small town bustling with history, warmth, and unwavering community spirit. It is here, nestled within the embrace of magnolia trees and pastures that stretch as far as the eye can see, that I have called home my entire life. To say that I’ve lived in Utica would be an understatement; I’ve grown, learned, and been profoundly shaped by the fabric of this remarkable community.
My earliest memories dance to the rhythm of my grandmother Roberta “Lean” Neal-Selmon’s kitchen. Her love was a warm stew simmering on the stove, a comforting pie cooling on the windowsill, and yet, it was more than just food; it was nourishment for the spirit. In times of joy and sorrow, my grandmother opened her doors, her heart, and her kitchen to those in need. Watching her serve others inspired me to understand the importance of compassion and the art of giving back. It is the lessons I learned from her that have become the guiding principles in my mission as a servant to others.
Throughout my childhood, my family instilled in me the values of integrity and respect. They emphasized the significance of being responsible stewards—not just of our resources but of our community as well. By understanding the importance of paying bills on time and managing personal funds before reaching out to help others, they taught me the true essence of being a pillar within a society.
Committed to Service
Education, rooted in this nurturing environment, became my passion. I traveled the hallways of my local schools, from elementary through community college, absorbing every lesson and experience. It was during this time that a spark ignited within me, leading me to engage in public service at just nine years old. I campaigned for Mississippi Senator Vincent Davis, whose journey transitioned him from public office to a position in the judiciary. This experience marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to advocate for my peers and uplift our community.
In 2012, when I advocated for youth jobs, it culminated in the creation of the Hinds County Youth Initiative Program, employing 15 young people across five districts. This was not just a program; it was a symbol of hope and opportunity. My commitment to revitalizing my hometown is evident, stemming from my desire to restore and beautify Utica. I have purchased blighted properties and transformed them into opportunities for growth and renewal.
Understanding the profound impact of access to resources, I established the Utica Farmer’s Market, stepping in to fill the void left by the loss of our local grocery store. The market became a vibrant hub, offering fresh produce and fostering connections among residents. It is here that neighbors gather, share stories, and form lasting bonds, weaving an even tighter fabric of community amongst us.
As an alderman, my dedication remains unwavering. I believe that empowerment comes through collaboration, compassion, and a shared vision for a brighter future. It is not enough to serve; we must work together to cultivate a thriving community that enables every resident to flourish. I implore each and every one of you to join me on this mission. Together, we can lay the groundwork for a more promising Utica—one that future generations will inherit.
Although my journey began as a public servant, I firmly believe that my influence should extend beyond my role as an alderman. Advocacy for economic development and proper representation for all citizens is imperative. We deserve leaders who embody the spirit of public service, genuinely seeking to uplift our community above all else.
Since my election to the Board of Aldermen in 2017, I have embraced the trust placed in me. I have been honored with critical responsibilities in public works, grant oversight, and the management of the Utica Farmers Market. My roles have transcended traditional boundaries, as I have represented Utica in various advisory capacities including the Community Learning Partnership and the Hinds County Economic Needs Assessment advisory group. My commitment to education shines brightly as I’ve served as Hinds County District Superintendent and as Vice-President of the Parent Teacher Organization at Utica Elementary/Middle School.
The paths we forge, the bridges we build, and the lives we touch define us as a community. I am proud of the legacy we are creating together in Utica, a testament to the love and care we extend towards each other. From my grandmother’s kitchen to the heart of local governance, my journey has been driven by a deep-seated love for my hometown. I invite you to join me in nurturing our roots, embracing our shared vision, and cultivating a vibrant community that will thrive for generations to come.
